Pronoun comprehension and cross-linguistic influence in monolingual and bilingual children

Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: Pronoun comprehension can present challenges for young bilingual monolingual children. The current study aimed to assess cross-linguistic influence (CLI) pronoun in early childhood. Several studies have demonstrated the role of overlap across languages its impact on language development. investigates acquisition another containing third-person pronouns English. Additional possible social influences are also discussed. Design/methodology/approach: In addition completion surveys vocabulary tests, toddlers preschoolers were presented with a forced-choice test identify ‘he/she/it’ between man doll, woman ball, monkey. Data analysis: Accuracy was analysed based age preschooler’s accuracy compared groups (monolingual English, without pronouns). Findings/conclusions: Overall, results that, although able comprehend ‘it’, children struggled ‘he’ ‘she’ until 3 years age. addition, preschool that learning distinguished pronouns, ‘she’, performed similarly English-speaking both better than did not distinguish ‘she’. findings discussed context within- between-language factors comprehension. Originality: Most recent research development involves production. This presents evidence CLI this difficult, yet common component language. Significance/implications: suggest different features negatively an integrated system bilinguals.
